How to brief and screen this role
Describe the outcome, not the technology
Briefs that list model names attract people who follow the news. Briefs that say "we spend six hours a week copying invoices into the ledger" attract people who fix that.
Ask what they have put into production and who uses it
Plenty of candidates have built impressive demos. Far fewer have shipped something a non-technical colleague relies on daily. Ask which one is still running and what broke first.
Test the judgment about what not to automate
A strong hire will tell you when a process should be simplified or dropped rather than automated. Someone who wants to automate everything you describe will build you a fragile machine.
Decide who owns it after launch
